A substantial yacht is made up of a thousand details, and the whole may be far greater than the sum of these parts, yet without people, she is nothing.
The pivotal person for any yacht is her owner. A small group are fortunate enough to create yachts truly their own. If you are such a person, the yacht is a part of you before she is conceived, and you retain the power to mould her form and the bedrock of her character.
Her personality will also depend on those who design her, build her and put to sea in her. Whether she smiles or frowns will be down to you all and therein lies the adventure.
Guiding the build of a yacht harmoniously from dreams to launching day is a supreme test of teamwork, which means far more than hiring a series of individual experts. The team at Fairlie has worked together for over twenty years, and from the faithful restoration of important classics to modern timber composite craft they have never been found wanting. The common factor is the unimpeachable standard of excellence.
Fairlie work with few clients at any one time. While some degree of overlap is inevitable, they like to concentrate on a maximum of two commissions at once, keeping owners at the centre of the operation
Unlike most private builders, Fairlie maintain an in house design office. This benefits owners in a number of ways and although the yard builds yachts using modern techniques, the design team are equally used to working with the world’s loveliest traditional craft. They properly understand the sweeping shearlines and fine detail that have all but disappeared from today’s waterfronts.
Whether state-of-the-art or traditional, timelessness sets Fairlie yachts apart. As friends under the same roof, Fairlie designers and builders consult throughout the project. This seamless approach means that what is drawn can be readily built. It also enables a shipwright encountering a technical difficulty to choose the best solution, doing away with the communication issues which can bedevil yacht builds.
The greatest day sees the owner’s vision and the yard’s capacity to transform it into reality, revealed to the world.
Their tests are tempests, wrote John Masefield about ships in general. Once the champagne is drunk and the dock lines let go, the shore fades, the talking stops and the computers fall dumb. Most of Fairlie’s management team have been yacht professionals at sea. They understand that it is here, not in a boat show, that the final judgment will be delivered. The ocean respects aesthetics, but only when backed by rigorous engineering. Fairlie yachts are the supreme exemplars of power encapsulated in grace.
